SINGAPORE: Apparel firms step up efforts to supply US retailers

29 October 2008

Apparel makers in Singapore are stepping up their efforts to build business with US retailers by claiming they have the reach and experience to help companies stay competitive in the global credit crisis.

As part of the Apparel Singapore campaign, which was launched in July, manufacturers say they offer a solution for US retailers who are reassessing their sourcing strategies to look for alternative supply chain and apparel partners.

They cite a 40-year track record of working with leading US fashion retailers such as Abercrombie and Fitch, Adidas, Esprit, Gap, Gymboree, JC Penney, Liz Claiborne, Macy’s, Nike, Target and Walt Disney.

And they say their global footprint spans multiple offshore production locations around the world, which means they have the flexibility to re-allocate production to different countries to ensure orders will be met.

Apparel Singapore is backed by the Singapore government and is intended as a seal of approval which stresses the industry's compliance with intellectual property rights and strict social and environmental standards.

Not only does it hope to raise the profile of Singapore apparel companies, but it also seeks to grow Singapore's share of the world apparel manufacturing business.

The initiative is managed by the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore (TaFf).

It is supported by government agencies International Enterprise (IE) Singapore, which supports the overseas growth of Singapore-based companies, and SPRING Singapore, which is responsible for growing innovative companies and fostering a competitive SME sector.

Singapore's apparel industry generated about US$4.5bn in manufacturing output in 2007, a 78% increase from US$2.5bn in 2003.

Adidas and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) have agreed an 11-year partnership, giving the sporting goods firm world-wide sponsorship rights for all IAAF World Athletic Series events from 2009 until 2019.

Adidas will be the official athletic sponsor and licensee product supplier for IAAF during this period, which includes the 2009 IAAF World Championships next summer in Berlin.

"The heritage of the Adidas brand is closely linked with the legacy of athletics and the IAAF," said Herbert Hainer, chairman and CEO of Adidas AG. "Therefore, we are very proud to announce our new partnership with IAAF and we are looking forward to shaping the future of athletics together at all levels in the coming years."

GERMANY: Adidas in “biggest ever” 60th anniversary campaign

25 November 2008

Adidas is set to mark the 60th anniversary of the company registering its iconic three stripes mark with the biggest ever global brand campaign for Adidas Originals.

Using the strapline "Celebrate Originality", the campaign is set against the backdrop of a house party hosting a mix of famous names from music, fashion and sport.

Musicians such as Katy Perry and the Ting Tings join footballer David Beckham and former tennis star Ilie Nastase in the campaign, alongside designers Kazuki and Jeremy Scott.

"Adidas Originals' biggest strength and point of difference is the ability of the Trefoil brand to be a relevant part of people's lives - in whatever lifestyle they have - skater, rocker, artist, musician, sneaker-head, sports fan, whatever," said Hermann Deininger, chief marketing officer at Adidas' Sport Style division.

The ad was directed by Nima Nourizadeh, with music remixed by Pilooski.

The campaign will involve two television spots, cinema, digital, activation events and a print campaign shot by RJ Shaughnessy.

The campaign launches today (25 November) in the US, and in the rest of the world in January 2009, lasting all year.

NIKE FLAGSHIP STORE TO OFFER CONSUMERS

Located at Wisma Atria, the store will be a venue to engage sporting enthusiasts and provide them access to innovative premium products.

SINGAPORE (17 November 2008) – Nike is changing the sports retail landscape with the opening of a new Nike flagship store in the famed Orchard Road shopping belt in Singapore. Conveniently located at Wisma Atria shopping mall, the store will offer consumers not just access to a wide selection of innovative premium products, but also a branded retail experience to connect their athletic world to the world of Nike.

“This Nike store represents our commitment towards serving the athlete in every active consumer. We aim to transform this store into more than just a premium retail destination. It will be a venue where sporting enthusiasts connect and where the passion of sports comes alive,” said Mr. Stanley Goh, Country Director, Nike Singapore.

To kick off the scheduled opening at the end of this month, the store will launch a special collection of Nike Windrunner jackets in Gold and Silver. Playing up the ‘Bling’ factor for the collection, each metallic hue is paired up with 12 pop shades to create unique combinations that cater to style-savvy consumers that wish to express their individualism through their selection. Rooted in sports, the Windrunner was originally a track jacket whose design has endured for over 25 years and has since evolved to become a lifestyle statement. These unique Nike Metallic Windrunners will only be available for retail exclusively at the Nike Wisma Atria flagship store in Singapore.

Creating part of the unique consumer experience at the store will be the availability of a NIKEiD STUDIO where select customization services will be offered to customers who like to define their own image. For a start, the NIKEiD STUDIO will provide tee-shirt customization options where individuals can decide on their choice of shirt colors, graphics, numbers and/or text as well as choice of application treatments to make a statement. Each creation will comprise the product innovation and premium standards of a Nike tee but remains characteristic and unique to each individual consumer.

Goh added, “We have employed the best talent within the Nike family to help design the space. Drawing inspiration from Nike’s strong heritage in track and field, we have added design elements to reflect our legacy and also added new details that demonstrate our constant quest for innovation. More importantly, we hope our customers can be inspired by the spirit of sports and embrace it into their personal lives.”

The store’s design was conceptualized by Oregon-based Nike Vice President of Special Projects, Tinker Hatfield, named by Fortune Magazine in 1998 as one of the 100 most influential designers of the century. Hatfield, a former athlete who trained under the legendary Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, is famous for his work with basketball superstar Michael Jordan on the Air Jordan line of sneakers. He also designed the brand newBeijing Nike Town outlet, which opened just before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

FRANCE: Customs officers seize more counterfeit sportswear

25 June 2007

French customs officers have seized more counterfeit leading-brand sportswear, uncovering 27,000 pairs of fake Adidas socks during an inspection of a Portuguese-registered lorry on the A10 motorway, near Poitiers.
The socks, presented in 9,000 packs of three, were bound for the UK. The driver of the vehicle was held pending questioning by the prosecutor's office in Poitiers before being released. The truck carrying the socks was impounded.
Representatives of Adidas confirmed the counterfeit nature of the goods which had a market value estimated at EUR135,000 (US$181,671).
The fake haul is the second concerning Adidas brand socks this year. In March, 5,040 packs of three worth EUR75,600 were seized, in the same in the same area and by the same customs patrol.
"As the recent finds demonstrate, leading brand sportswear - garments and footwear and socks - has become the predilection of the counterfeiters and very often the latest models are copied," a French Customs official told just-style.
Earlier this month French Customs uncovered more than 9,000 pairs of counterfeit Nike Shox sports shoes.
This followed the seizure of 15,000 items of Nike, Lacoste and Dolce & Gabbana fake brand sportswear in May and 15,000 pairs of fake Nike brand sports shoes in April. Earlier in the year, France's duty men intercepted a cargo of around 16,000 pairs of fake Nike and Adidas sports shoes.

FRANCE: French Customs seize fake Nike and Adidas footwear

3 January 2007

French Customs last month seized around 16,000 pairs of fake Nike and Adidas sports shoes with an estimated market value of almost EUR3m (US$3.99m).
Following the discovery of close to 8,000 counterfeit Adidas brand trainers during a routine inspection of a lorry at the port of Calais, Customs officers the same day raided a clandestine warehouse in the Paris area, seizing over 8,000 pairs of fake Adidas and Nike shoes.
The origin of the goods has not been disclosed.
In September 2006, French Customs in Chambéry seized 8,660 pairs of fake Nike Air Max Plus and Air Max 360 trainers with an estimated value of almost EUR1.5m.
The goods were being transported in a Belgian-registered lorry between Belgium and Italy.

VIETNAM: Local government destroys Adidas and Nike fakes

31 August 2007

A shop in Ho Chi Minh city selling fake Nike and Adidas sports clothes and shoes is to be fined around VND53m (US$8,800) and its stock destroyed.
Violating industrial and intellectual property is commonplace in Vietnam, much like other surrounding countries such as China, challenging international investors doing business there.
The Vietnamese government has recently been applying new measures to deal with the issue, and its latest decision is in accordance with Vietnamese Government's Decree on Industrial Property.
